One of the traditional ways to do this was using a Raspberry Pi with a suitable RFM9x module. There are now a variety of boards created for other similar projects such as [Meshtastic](https://meshtastic.org/) and [TTN](https://www.thethingsnetwork.org/)

Initially I'm looking at utilising the [Heltec](https://heltec.org/) [Lora 32v3](https://heltec.org/project/wifi-lora-32-v3/) boards which contain an ESP32-S3 controller with the SX1262 Lora chip
